If you don't know, "code golf" is this nerd thing where you have to solve a given programming challenge using the least code possible. Solutions to these challenges can sometimes be sublimely brilliant. "Reverse code golf", then, would be about solving a problem in the most inefficient way possible. The joke, then, is "what if nerd reference, but backwards". COMEDY AU (THAT'S THE ATOMIC SYMBOL FOR GOLD)
A couple other things to note. First of all, this is nowhere near the most inefficient possible way to write Moby Dick. Second, this has already been done in actual code golf .

When Randall's writing these, how does he know when to stop?
"20 lines of nerd word salad and lazy pop culture references wasn't enough, but 21 will surely knock 'em dead"?

"Scientists are trying to unify these two science things, so it would be funny if they were also trying to unify them with other things"
"Scientists have split the atom, and they've also split Sudan, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, the USSR, and the EU"
"Scientists have learned how to make powered flight work, and they've also figured out how to make cereal"

The joke is supercilious and hypocritical-- "people who didn't work for NASA like me shouldn't be allowed to make jokes about killer robots"-- but what really burns me up is that Randall can't be bothered to draw individual panels in a stick figure comic:
I also went back a few weeks looking for more Tai Chi poses. Those aren't all quite identical:
But by God, I wish I could get paid to be that lazy.

The irony of Randall Munroe telling a joke about the Dunning-Kruger effect should escape no one.

Behold the modern man: a man so unmoored from reality that he has lost all sense of perspective; so weak-minded that he is thrown into spasms of terror by the sight of two competing blandishments; so sheltered that he is able to indulge his solipsism and cowardice without apparent consequence. Not by the sweat of his brow does he eat his food. He lives the life of a rentier, utterly free from obligation. Is he fit for anything but the guillotine?

Every year, when the Super Bowl happens, Randall is wracked with anguish as he struggles to decide whether he wants to show off how magnanimous he is by condescending to not be an asshole to his friends or whether he wants to sneer at the mouth-breathers. Having elected Trump, this year the mouth-breathers must suffer the full measure of Randall's searing disdain. We can only hope, for their sake, that Randall will have forgiven them by next year.
