Today's college students don't read XKCD. The target audience, as this comic demonstrates, is the people who were taking calculus in college in 2007, for whom XKCD remains a mnemonic callback to the last time they were able to believe that their above-average intellects would lead to the fulfillment of their material dreams. Reading it conjures up again the sense of having potential.

The joke is that unlike the JWST Santa Claus actually exists.
This is a common psychological defense mechanism among rationalists, where they acknowledge the fundamental incoherence of their worldview but believe that by hanging a lampshade on it they render it unimportant. No one tell Randall about Godel's incompleteness theorem.
