Once, Randall recognized mindless accumulation of objects as a futile attempt to construct meaning in a godless life. But today is his 34th birthday, and rare indeed is the man who can enter middle age without being mastered by some acquisitive drive. In a more energetic soul, this might manifest itself as aggressive business practices, or designs on another's wife, or war. In Randall's, it is stamp collecting.
